  • July 20, 1942 Professor R. L. Madison Campus Dear Professor Madison: I am enclosing a copy of a letter recently received from Hon. Baxter Durham, written in response to my letter of the 9th, which I read to you in my office. It would appear to me that the proper thing to do for the current year is, for the Board of Trustees to retain you on its payroll. Then we can give deliberate consideration to the steps to be taken in the future. I believe a way will be found, barring unforeseen circumstances, whereby we can prevent your having to accept an income which is materially less than you now receive. The Board of Trustees certainly is anxious that your present meagre salary be not reduced. If you care to discuss this matter further, I shall be glad to see you. Sincerely yours, H. T. Hunter, President
