In this letter of June 27, 1864, Henry Marshall Misemer (1832-1865) writes his "Dear wife," Martha J. Misemer, from Athens, Alabama. He sends her encouraging words for her low spirits and tells her to trust and pray to God. He tells her they marched for eight days from Nashville to Athens, Alabama and shares logistics of the war and their future. He wants to know if she received the 50 pounds of rice and other goods and money he has sent her. He lets her know that he received the socks she sent and sold two pairs as he had no place to put them. He explains that he spent his money foolishly for fear it would be stolen out of his pocket, but now that he can send it to her, he does that. He thinks the war will end this summer and happily shares the news that Abe Lincoln was nominated again for president and Andrew Jackson for vice president.
