in "Selections from Speeches and Writings of Thomas L. Clingman") suggesting that, whether or not Professor Mitchell had ascended in 1835 the highest peak in the Black Mountains, yet, as a memorial to his" pioneer services, this peak should bear the name Mt. Mitchell rather than Clingmans Dome. Guyot's article creates the impression b ' that he felt that Professor Mitchell had climed the lo\yer peak, although A this conclusion seems hardly tenahlg in the light of the analysis of the controversy published by Charles Phillips in the University of North Carolina magazine of larch, 1858 The Guyot manuscript affords to an outsider a remarkably clear outline of what appears to be a very complex mountain system* Guyot's general description of the Southern Appalachian system may well be repeated here. He says: "The vast mountain region of Western North Carolina and Northern Georgia (whieh has been the special subject of my investigationsj.aand the map of which is befor you,) is comprised between two of the main chains of the Appalachian System, which divide, in Virginia, near the great Bend of New River, already mentioned, and continue to diverge South- westwardly,, keeping in North Carolina, at an average distance, first of twenty/^chen of forty miles apart, and even of 50 in the basin of the French Broad River. "This high mountainous region extends thro* the Northern portion of Gerogia, and then runs out, rather suddenly, losing itself in the general swell which forms the base of the Appalachian System in Forth Alabama and Georgia. "The Eastern chain is on the whole the highest, and the most regular and continuous of the two. It is the true continuation of the Blue Ridge of Virginia which borders: the Great Central Valley under various names , from the Green Mts. of Hew England to the extremity of the system. This chain takes the name of Iron and Stone Mts., in North-eastern Tennessee, Smoky Mts. in the centre and farther South, — "that of Unaka Mts. beyond the cut of the Little Tennessee, and of Frog Mts. South of the gorges of the Hi.mesee.

This 27-page manuscript recounts the involvement of Arnold Guyot in the Great Smoky Mountains. A geologist and geographer, Arnold Henry Guyot (1807-1884), began his exploration of the Appalachians in 1849. His purpose was to record the elevations of various peaks and develop a systematic geographic outline of the mountain systems of the eastern United States. The manuscript was collected by George Masa. Born Masahara Iizuka and raised in Japan, George Masa (1881-1933) emigrated to the U.S. when he was 20 years old and, in 1915, came to Asheville, where he lived the rest of his life. Masa was active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Myron Haliburton Avery (1899–1952), was president of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club and chairman of the board of the Appalachian Trail Conference.
