Goingback Chiltoskey
-
Goingback Chiltoskey (1907-2000), a native of Cherokee, North Carolina and a member of the Eastern Band of a Cherokee, was a renowned woodcarver. He was known for his many carvings of animals and people and worked primarily in native woods like walnut, cherry, apple, buckeye, and holly. In this photograph, Chiltoskey (right) greets a member of the delegation accompaning Joan Mondale, wife of Vice President Mondale. The photograph was made on June 7, 1977 when Mrs. Mondale attended the ground breaking of the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville, NC. Mondale was accompanied by the wife of the U.S. Senator from North Carolina, Robert B. Morgan, and Mrs. Lana Gudger, wife of Vonno Lamar Gudger a U.S. Congressman from North Carolina's 11th District. Chiltoskey’s carving can be seen on the lower left. The photographer's name is unknown.
