  • Sulphite THE Si i ri 1111 PROCESS of converting wood chips into pulp was developed by B. G. Tilghman about fifty years ago, U. S. Patents having been granted him in the year 1867. This pulp, made from spruce wood, and in more recent years from hem look also, took the place of rags in the mtnufaOtUTC of paper, its long, strong fibre giving the p;iper strength. There are many p:ipcr-m;ikcrs in active service today, who once scoffed at the idea of making paper without rags. Unbleached Sulphite Pulp is mixed with "ground wood," for the manufacture of "news-print," and it is used in larger proportions for tJie making of "bag" and "wrapping." Blkaciild SliLNirn is mixed with pulp of shorter fibre, such :is uh pulp, for the making of "book" paper, and On excellent grade of "bond" is made from this pulp. Ivxtrumh Caul must be exercised in the preparation of the wood and in the removal of all bark, to insure .1 clean pulp; and the preparation <>f the cooking liquor, the cooking operation, screening and bleaching the pulp calls for extreme care and watchfulness on the part of many skilled operatives.
