Mrs. J. H. Slagle, 9 – 29 – 24. Franklin N.C. Dear Madame: - I wish to thank you again and again for your fine letter, which has just reached me. I have already read and re-read it several times. If you only knew how I enjoy reading your letters, and those from dear “Dick” you would not dare to mention about them taking up my time. These letters rest me after a strenuous days work. It is the next thing to having a chat with my friends. I am too far away for this, so the letters are the next best thing. Then too Christ’s spirit always comes with them. I am still enjoying the apples, very much indeed they are so good for my health, but do not send me so many they take of your time and strength and I feel that you have quite as much as

In this letter from September 29, 1924, George Washington Carver writes to Mrs. J. Henry (Margaret Gillespie) Slagle thanking her for her correspondence and expressing his joy over knowing her son, Thomas (Dick). Carver offers his hope that Dick will do well in his studies and describes his wishes for Dick's future in science, hoping that he can continue to be a mentor to the younger man. He also offers gratitude for Mr. Slagle's improving health and expresses hope that it will continue to improve.
