and father said. I am so glad that he can be in school, I hope he can finish the course there. I shall not be satisfied until I see him the great food and medicinal chemist which he promised to be. He is going to do research work well also, he has quite a bit of artistic ability also, He is going to draw and paint well. I am praying that his Fathers will improve for his own sake, and for your sake, and third for “Dear Dick’s” sake so he can do his best work in school. The dutiful son that he is makes him wor[r]y about his dear mother, he talked about you so much while he was here. I am so glad his Father is better, of course he will have his good and bad days. I am so glad you are hopeful for Him, I do hope he will improve. I know that you are and have been his nurse all the time and this is why I do not want to add a single other duty to your already over full life. I do enjoy your letters so much, but do not feel that you have to answer them, I shall take it for granted that I hear from you through dear “Dick.” I am going to try to come to the mountains when “Dick” can go with me, as I want him to do some sketching in color, I will bring my sketching outfit. I want him to get acquainted with all

In this letter from September 29, 1924, George Washington Carver writes to Mrs. J. Henry (Margaret Gillespie) Slagle thanking her for her correspondence and expressing his joy over knowing her son, Thomas (Dick). Carver offers his hope that Dick will do well in his studies and describes his wishes for Dick's future in science, hoping that he can continue to be a mentor to the younger man. He also offers gratitude for Mr. Slagle's improving health and expresses hope that it will continue to improve.
