Your friends here all wish to be remembered to you. Mrs. Owens, wanted to know, last week if the handsome boy from N. Car. was coming down this summer. She said he is one of the nicest young men we have ever had here. I told her she was correct in her assumption. She says remember me to him when you write. My dearest boy “Dick”. Sept. 1 – 20: Your arrived tonight as such a welcome messenger, as I was getting very thirsty to hear from you. I miss you this summer so very much that I have decided as I said before not to let another summer pass without being with you. God willing we will work out the plan between this and next summer, you must either come down here or we will spend some time in the mountains collecting specimens of all kind (except snakes). Of course if you were down here we would my laboratory, library etc, etc, to draw upon, and you would be among your good friends here who would take much pleasure in making it pleasant for you. Is this your Junior or Senior year in College? Son I am so glad you are feeling fine and that the family are improving. I am especially pleased to hear of your Father’s improvement.

In this letter from September 1, 1925, George Washington Carver writes to Dick Slagle. Carver discusses his hopes and plans for the following summer; he hopes for Slagle to come to Tuskegee or, if that is not possible, to go to Franklin himself, to spend time collecting biological specimens. After some passing remarks about the health of Slagle and his family and some mention of the weather, Carver discusses a mica sample that Slagle had delivered, comparing it to a sample from the previous summer and talking about some new methods in mica processing. Carver mentions that his throat is healing from a previous ailment, and then enthusiastically discusses some work he is doing with dyes, hoping to be able to teach it to Slagle, along with many other things. He closes the letter by passing along greetings from some of Slagle's friends in Tuskegee.
