for we generally drive until ten or eleven in the evening and start out again between 6 & 8 in the morning. Money is being spent on conservation work under our supervision at the rate of over $100,000 a month. So it’s no small job. Added to that, Mr. Heritage, my boss, has been off on his regular Forestry work quite a bit. And next week he leaves it all in my lap for about six weeks while he is on detail to the Washington office. Our life in Minneapolis is rather nice in many ways. We are cooped up in a tiny apartment. But it is comfortable. Roy goes to a school full of rough necks. He and Hoddie go to a Sunday school full of semi-highbrows and very fine folks. Hoddie will start kindergarten in February, probably. We have met some nice folks. And the city is a good one in many ways. Of course the fly in the whole ointment is, what will happen March 31st. But whatever it is-- we have been almost foolishly happy these past months. And we have had quiet anchorage from a horribly stormy voyage. If we run in to foul weather again we can at least fight back a bit better for this breathing spell. I even got a filling in a tooth that was fast going. And now to bed-- the days are pretty strenuous. Did you know DC Honey-- a plant pathologist at Ithaca? He was a group foreman at one of our Wisconsin agencys [sic]-- on Blister Rust control work. In this letter of January 2, 1935, George Kephart (1894-1961) writes to his mother, Laura Kephart from Winnebego, Nebraska while working as a Forest Engineer for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He describes long days of driving as his office covers Minnesota, Wisconsin, Saulte Ste Marie in Michigan, North and South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa. He explains that $100,000 a month is being spent of conservation work and that his boss, Mr. Heritage is leaving him in charge for six weeks. George Kephart’s home base is Minneapolis where his wife and two children are living happily. He asks for the letter to be sent along to Leonard and Cornelia so a short note from Barbara Kephart Bird (1897-1985) to Leonard is included.
