Our men pursued them till dark, killed a good many and taking a good many prisoners. At night the fighting ceased. We had now drove in all their outpost on both sides. The night was spent in making preparations for tomorrow, which was Sunday. The whole Yankie force now occupied a small position of g round and those heights that I have spoke of before. They was well fortified and had all their guns ready. That night A. P . Hill s Di vision w s thrown directly in front of the enemy. We took up our position within 400 yds of the Yankies. We throwed out our pickets and was ordered to lie down on our guns and no man to offer to sleep one wink. The night was clear and nice. Everything was calm except the occasional firing of the pickets. The whip-poor- will hollered all night. The moon shone brightly and while we was lying there in that position only waiting, it seemed like, for the sun to rise to march out to meet death. Oh how often do I ponder over in my mind the uncertainties of tomorrow for many. Oh how many in the course of 24 hours would exchange time for Eternity. Stop for a moment, if you please, and think of such a condition. I felt like that I would be much better satisfied if I knew my friends was praying in my behalf. It is impossible for me to express my feeling upon that occasion. The night passed away swift as eagles wings. The morning was clear and nice. About sunrise our pickets commenced firing rapidly. In about one hour the guns from both sides commenced to belch vengence at each other. The pickets continued fighting and they continued to cannonade till about 9 o'clock when we got the order to advance. We rose to our feet and commenced moving forward. The Yankies as we commenced coming in fight, opened new batteries on us. It was but a few minutes before the whole of both armies was engaged in deadly conflict. The balls flew thick as hail and it seemed like the whole earth shook.
