There was no heavy engagement that evening. The Yankies kept going back all the evening. Our men continued to follow them up and belched vengence at them all that evening and once and a while they would get clost enough to use muskets. At sunset the great guns ceased to roar and all was quiet except a crack once from the pickets which was heard all night long. We had that evening drove back all of Hookers outpost and compelled him to somewhat consolidate his force. We was now within one mile of the Hookers main force and it was ascertained by our generals that we could not go an y further in the same directions for Old Joseph had selected one of the best positions that is anywhere on the Rappahannock. His whole army almost occupied some heights that commanded the country all round for several miles. On the heights all his great guns was planted to slay every one that attempted to op pose. As I stated before, we halted about sundown. While we was halted I saw Old Lee and Jackson in close conversation. Finding that it was impossible to go any further in the same direction our generals at once resolved to take them by a flank movement. Next morning, which was Saturday, we took up the line of m arch early and moved clear round the Yankies and above them and come right down river. About three o'clock on Saturday evening we reached their picket lines. On the right of their army, having moved clear round them that day, the line of battle was formed and we commenced advancing. Their was one line of battle of our men before the one that I was in. We moved on about one mile and reached the place where they was formed up in line to meet us. Volley after volley was delivered by both sides, but the line that I was in was not in that fight but kept back as reserve. It soon became too hot for the Yankies. They commenced going back.

In this lengthy letter of May 10, 1863, G. J. Huntley writes his father and mother from his location in Camp Gregg near Guiney Station, Virginia detailing the events of a battle on the Rappahannock. Huntley asks for everyone’s prayers. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
