March the 11th, 1862 Martin County, Hamilton With pleasure I seat myself this morning to drop you a few lines to inform you of my present situation. I cannot say that I am well. I am able to be up and about but my health is by no means good. Wm. Jones is in common health, Tolliver Huse is at Goldsboro in the hospital. I have not heard from him in several days. He was not very bad the last time I heard from him. We are still at this place but I cannot tell how long we will remain here. They are still fortifying this place but it may be all of no use. I have heard nothing from Burnsides lately. Where he will make his next attack, I cannot tell. They are doing every thing they can to get our Regiment in for the War. There is a good many joining. I have nothing of mutch importance to write you. Ransen Price got here a few days ago. He brought me the things that you sent. I want you to right as often as you can.

In this letter of March 11, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes to his sister Tincy Huntley from his location in Hamilton, NC. Although they are fortifying their location, they are waiting for Burnside’s next move, and trying to get their Regiment “In for the War.” He asks her to tell Pap not to enter the war, and asks about the crops. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
