idea when I went to see him the Sunday before he left but what he would go home and recruit up right off and come back to camp before long. I feel in a lost condition since I heard of his death for I could pass the time sweeter with him than any one else. When me and him was together time always passed swiftly, as we was always in conversation upon some subject. But now my leisure moments passes dull and slow. But though he has gone from time to eternity I hope he is out of all trouble and is now realizing the happiness of Heaven. I can inform that there has come orders now in a few minutes for our Regiment to move five miles towards where the Yankies is. We will then be in 6 or 7 miles of the Yankies. We may be in a fight in two days. I want you to write whether you get the clothes that I sent by Tolliver or not. If you did not, Wm. Martin went with Tolliver home. You can see him and he can tell you something about what went with them and I also sent ten dollars in money with him. S

In this letter of May 4, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes his sister Tincy Huntley from his location in Caroline County, Virginia in reply to her letter about their friend Tolliver who recently died after returning home. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
