Spotsylvania County, Va. Dear Friends I seat myself this evening to drop you a few lines to inform you of my present condition. I am well at this time and hope my lines will find you all in the same condition. I have nothing that is very interesting to write at this time. My last letter that I wrote to you was dated the 4th of this month. We was then on the railroad about 12 miles from Fredricksburg. Since then we have marched 6 miles closer to the Yankies. We are now within sight of each other. Every day our pickets has taken some of the Yankies prisoners and the Yankies has taken some of ours. There is skirmishing every day between our pickets and the Yankies, though there has not been many killed yet on neither side. It was thought several days ago that there would have been a general engagement here before now but it has not come yet and I am unable to tell whether there will be any regular engagement here or

In this letter of May 20, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes his friends about his journey to Spotsylvania County, Virginia where his camp is now within sight of the Yankies. There are skirmishes every day between the pickets, but no regular engagement yet. His camp is ready to leave on five-minutes notice, but he doesn’t know where they will go. He speaks about the camp conditions and says that he saw his cousin George Wilkie about two miles away in another Regiment. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
