  • that they are going to try to retake Newbern, that being the place taken by the Yankies. But I cannot say whether they will try to get the place back or not. If they undertake it my opinion is that our Regiment will be ordered to help. The fall of Newbern caused a power of excitement and confusion among the people in that vacinity, lots having left their homes and all they possessed and moved up the country and throwed themselves at the mercy of others. I am unable to tell what will be the result of this war. This much I can say, I don't want to hear tell of any Union flag being raised any where in the South until we know the terms that we are going back in the Union on. If we have to go back on northern terms and just as they say, I am one that expects to fight as long as life lasts. I shall choose my grave in preference to a subjects condition. I have always enjoyed Liberty and if I can't enjoy it through life I expect my bones to rest in the grave. I am willing to go back in the Union upon honorable terms and no others. They may gain victories here and there but that will not dishearten those that expect to have liberty, if they will not give us our liberty as a free people we will
