  • June the 23/63 Camp within 10 miles of Winchester in the valley of Virginia Dear Friends A few more lines this morning to you. I am in common health at this time but wearried by so much marching. Something like 10 days ago we left Fredericksburg. It was impossible to tell where we was going. We have been marching ever since that time till this morning. We have stopped, but I don't know how long. We are within 10 miles of Winchester and I am within 8 miles of Flemings, where I stayed last fall. I would be glad to go and see them, but there is no chance of it for the Yankies is over there. Griffin never got to us at Fredericksburg. I was worried about it. I needed the things. I expect he come after we left and had to sell all things. Don't never start any thing more to me except it is by some soldier for them people that is at home can't do nothing. If Griffin had started in time, like he ought to have done, it would have been right. If the things is los t I want you to make him pay for them in the right way. If you can send them a piece at a time by soldiers that is coming, do it. You need not attempt to send anything like a box, f or we are a long way from any railroad. If Griffin carried the things back home, maybe you can send them by Soldiers that is coming a piece at a time. But you need not put yourself to much trouble about it for I can make out somehow till fall, if I should live. There is one third of our army in Maryland and I expect we will go there in a few days.
