July the 24th, 1862 Camp near Richmond, Va. Dear Friends I seat myself this morning to drop you a few lines to inform you of my present situation. I am in common health at this time and I hope my lines will come to hand in due time and find you all well. I have nothing that is interesting to write you. I got my clothes yesterday evening. The honey had run out and stained my clothes a good deal but I don't think they are hurt. It will wash out. I am well pleased with my clothes except the britches. They are entirely too large. My honey tastes well, the bread is sorter spoiled. I also had a letter from home yesterday that give me much satisfaction to hear that you was all well. Everything is quiet here now. I don't think that there will be another fight near in some time, though I may be wrong. It may come before long. I want to know whether you are going to have any school this fall or not. If there is any chance, I want you to send all the children to school this coming fall and winter and send them regular. You spoke of coming back with Wm. Jones. If it is your desire to come, I want you to come, but it can't cost you less than 40 dollars, that is the whole trip. As for my coming, there is no chance of that. If you do come and will

In this letter of July 24, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes his friends from his location near Richmond, Virginia to let them know that he has received his clothes. If there is school in the fall he wants the children to go. He states who he will vote for in the upcoming election. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
