You about my being in the fight and getting wounded. I shall not attempt to give you a description of what I saw on the battlefield hoping that I will have the opportunity some time of seeing you all and then we can talk it over. I am going to send my overcoat home by David Murrow and you can get it from his house or maybe I can get him to carry it to B. Washburns. I am unable to tell when there will be another fight for some think in a few days. I want you to write often and state whether you need any cotton cards or not. I can get them in Richmond for 10 dollars. Make all the money you can and if I never get home, give the children good learning. There will be a fine time after this ends for young people. I would like to come home and eat fruit, but there is no chance. I will come when I can. Save all silver and gold. Write soon, so nothing more at present. I send my best respects to all my connections, none excepted. G. J. Huntley

In this letter of July 16, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes his friends from his location near Richmond, Virginia where he has just recovered from a “very sick spell” and where there are many sick men in low spirits. He talks about the price of food in the hospital and hopes that he will see them one day to tell them about what he saw on the battlefield. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
