  • August the 15th, 1862 Camp near Gordonsville, Va. Dear Friends I write a few lines in much haste to let you know how I am getting along, I am very unwell at this time, caused, I suppose by so much hard marching and exposure. We have been marching nearly constant day and night for three weeks past and there has been a power of rain and we have taken it all. Just lie down and He in the rain all night without any thing over us. Much hardships such as that has worn me plum out. We have got orders now to cook two days rations to move somewhere, I reckon, but I don't know where. On the 9th of this month about two hours we attacked the Yankies. The fight lasted till about two hours in the night. We whipped them with all ease and run them about one mile and taken about 500 prisoners. I was in all the fight and come out without the mark of a bullet on me. We are about 80 miles from Richmond in Orange County, close to Gordonsville. I still hear from passengers that you are coming to see us. If you do, if you will try to you will get to come
