April the 3, 1862 Wain County Camp near Goldsboro, NC Dear friends it is with pleasure that I seat myself to drop you a few lines to inform you of my present situation. I am in common health at this time. I have improved a good deal since my last letter in health. I read a letter from yesterday which gave me much pleasure to learn that you was all well. But I was more highly gratified to learn that Old Rutherford had responded so nobley to the call of her country in volunteering. We are still in camp here about two miles from Goldsboro. On the railroad that runs to Newbern there is about 12 thousand troops camped within one half-mile of our camp. I suppose there is about 30 thousand troops within 50 miles of this town. We are expecting Burnsides to make an attempt at Kinston. Every hour he has been landing a power of forces and ammunition, wagons, and horses at Newbern lately which all seems good signs of his intention to advance upon Kinston before long if he makes an attack on Kinston. I have no doubt but what it will be a powerful time for I think that we can get 25 thousand forces there in 48 hours. Our intention is to whip him there any way he can fix it. We have some of the best drilled forces here

In this letter of April 3, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes to his friends in care of his sister Tincy Huntley from his location near Goldsboro, NC. He talks about camp life and how many troops are in the area. He hopes to get home to harvest and cut wheat “if I should live that long.” This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
