Jan. the 5th, 1861 Camp Mangum, Wake County, Raleigh, NC Dear Friends and Relations I seat myself to drop you a few lines to inform you of my present situation. I am well at this time and I hope these lines will find you enjoying the same blessing. I have nothing of great importance to write you. There is nothing transpired that is interesting since my last letter. Last night was the coldest night I have felt lately. It sleeted and snowed all night and it made me think of being at home mighty by a warm fire I can assure you. All I can inform you that the health of our Regiment is much better than it was at High Point though there is still a good many dying. There was one died last night close to where I stay. I cannot give you any certain information when we will leave here for the Colonel don't even know himself. But we are looking for orders every day. The 35 Regiment leaves next week or the week after certain for the coast. The Governor Ajutant and Colonel is trying to get this Regiment to go in for the war or for three years. I don't want you to think about coming to the war. Stay at home and make all you can. I want you to prepare for a big corn crop for you will know what corn will bring before one year. I still have a hope that I shall serve my time out and come home some. But I can't tell how it will be if I ever do get home. I want to be able to go to school a while. I want you to write as often as convenient. I have not read nary letter from home since I come to camp. I have been dreaming a good deal about home for several nights and I would like to hear from you all.

In this letter of January 5, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes to friends and relations stating that the health of his Regiment is much better, however some still dying of illness. He does not yet know when his Regiment will be leaving or when they will be armed. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
