Jan. the 22nd, 1862 Wayne County, Goldsboro, NC Dear friends and people I seat myself to drop you a few lines to inform you of my present situation. I am in good health at this time and I hope these lines will find you all in the same condition. It has not been long since I rote to you and if it was not for some particular business I should not right at this time. Me and Wm. Jones and Tolliver Hughes and James Wood started some money home today by David Harrill. He promised to take it to Berry McDaniels and leave it there in his care. David Harrill is a Lieutenant in Capt. Edwards company. I want you to go to McDaniels and get it as soon as you can. I sent 26 dollars, I put it in a letter. Wm. and Tollivers is both in one letter. I think and I supposed Woods will be in a letter too. Wm. sent 30 dollars, Tolliver 26 and Wood 30. Woods was all ten dollar bills, he said for you to get it and send it to his wife and to tell her that he is well and that he would right as soon as he left here and got stationed. I want you to attend to it and get it all and send it to the different ones as soon as possible. Wm. was going to right for Robert to go to McDaniel and get it but we concluded that it would be the best for you to go. You will know the different amounts. Mine is 26 Wm. 30 To. 26 Woods 30. I think the most of mine is pretty safe money but I want you to spend it for any thing you think best for it is uncertain whether I ever get home any more or not. One request I have to make and that is for you to try to give the rest of the children a good education. I can inform you that there is a good deal of sickness hear. They are dying nearly every day. Landrum Sparks died last night and more than that we expect to

In this letter of January 22, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes to friends and people from his location in Goldsborough, NC to let his family know that he and three other men in the camp have sent money home. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
