Furniture: stepback cabinet

Item
?

Item’s are ‘child’ level descriptions to ‘parent’ objects, (e.g. one page of a whole book).

  • This stepback cabinet was made by woodworker Jesse Bryson Stalcup around 1918. A number of useful features are incorporated in this kitchen furniture item including two flour or meal bins that open to the front, upper storage shelves, a horizontal work surface, and, on the lower right side, an enclosed storage slot for a dough tray and rolling pin. The cabinet features mortise and tenon joints; manufactured hinges, handles, and latches; and its original finish was applied by Hyldah Jane Stalcup, one of the Stalcup's daughters. The artifact shows the skill and craftsmanship of a talented western North Carolina builder. Jesse Bryson Stalcup (1860-1931), born in Swain County, N.C., was the son of Thomas Belew Stalcup and Charity Jane Stalcup. The family lived near Whittier on Conley's Creek where Jesse grew up as a skilled carpenter. In 1881, Jesse Bryson Stalcup met and married Alice Florence Kelly. They had eight children and lived in several western N. C. locations. Jesse himself worked as a carpenter, millwright, and Baptist preacher.
