My dear Mr Kephart. I suppose that by this time you have returned from your summer trip up the Ocona Lufty, and I am wondering what kind of a time you had. Did it pan out as you anticipated? and did you get any of that bad weather we had during August. I would be interested in learning something about your grub supply, for example what did you take, and did it last all summer, or did you go to a supply center at intervals. My own grub supply on this years trip to the Adirondacks, which you thought scant turned out to be ample and we brought home some of it. Our actual consumption for 3 of us for 13 days was as follows: - Flour 8 lbs Sugar 6 ½ “ Bacon 8 “ Coffee 1 “ Tea 1 oz. + - Spaghetti 2 lbs Beans 2 ½ “ Cheese 1 “ Bak. Powder ½ “ Milk “ ½ “ “ cans 8 cans 5 c size Egg Powder ¼ lb Soup (Maggi) 1 ½ “ Beef Cubes 6 Hard Tack 1 lb Apricots 1 ½ (could have used 3 lbs) Prunes 1 ½ (could have used 3 lbs) Corn Meal 1 ½ “ Oatmeal 1 “ This amount “gers” almost exactly with the amount we used in 1913, when 3 of us used 39 lbs in 13 days. My plans for a forest cruise this year were knocked in the head the first day out. Havekotle (who wrote you about the Smokies) missed his connections at Buffalo, and delayed us a day, and when we did arrive, he cut his hand with his axe very badly. It was his first stroke with his new Damascus, and it cut a gash 2 inches long down to the bone. I gave him surgical treatment until my supplies ran out and then he let soap water run into

In a letter to Horace Kephart, written on October 7th, 1916, Frank L. Miller discusses his trip to the Adirondack Mountains, and gives Kephart a list of food supplies he brought with him. Miller mentions that his initial plans for the trip went awry, when a mutual friend missed his connection in Buffalo and when he finally arrived he cut his hand with his axe. He also describes the weather, living conditions, and his animosity for small tents.
