Webster N.C. Jan. 26 1942 My Dearest Son Sonnie Boy ___ it has been 5 months since I have had a letter from you, if you get this Please write To me. I was so happy to get The wire that you was all right that is all the news I had had from you in so long. Only Frank wrote me he had been with you 4 days in manila – and he had such a grand time with you, I have had several letters from Frank. he was all right. The last I heard from him, Floyd has been sick again, and has been to Duke Hospital for examination. He is on a diet and may have to have ? for an ulserated stomach. But he is on a diet at Present and that may help him. They have said their home here at web. and paid on the bording house where they live we are getting on a bout as usual – and am hoping you are well and all right to, do be good and remember I am all ways praying for you and all the Boys for your safety And success and victory to come soon. A letter from Samuel's mother, Frances Elvira Alexander Owens, to Samuel Owens about everyday life. Samuel Robert Owens (1918-1995) was stationed at Cavite Naval Yard in the Philippines when the United States entered World War II. He was a member of the crew of the submarine tender USS Canopus (AS-9), which was actively involved in the defense of the Bataan peninsula until the fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942. The majority of the crew of USS Canopus, including Owens, were captured by the Japanese at Corregidor, and became prisoners of war. Owens remained a POW until the end of the war and received the Silver Star and Bronze Star for his service.
