  • This is an invitation to an annual exhibit and sale of crafts from the John C. Campbell Folk School, held at the Russell Sage Foundation in the 1930s. Special features were the music of John Jacob Niles and a presentation of the photographs of Doris Ulmann, who had photographed extensively in the area around the Folk School during 1933-1934. The invitation lists available craft objects, such as woodcarvings, brooms, basketry, and textiles produced by the John C. Campbell Folk School. This event was organized by Louise Pitman, head of the Handicraft Department of the Folk School. Pitman, a New Jersey native and a Columbia University graduate, used her connections outside of the Appalachian region to market Folk School crafts nationwide.
