  • Fontana dam was built in the 1940s to meet the increased need for electricity brought about by the nation’s involvement in World War II. The tallest dam in the Eastern United States, the dam created Fontana Lake which flooded over 10,000 acres of land along the southwestern boundary of the Great Smoky Mountains. Judson was one of the small towns completely submerged when the dam was completed. Located in Swain County, North Carolina, Judson was four miles north of the town of Almond.
