  • Robert L. Madison (1867–1954) prepared this timeline which shows the history of financial support provided by the State of North Carolina to Western Carolina Teachers College known as Cullowhee High School in the late 1880s. The document was prepared in connection with the College's fiftieth anniversary celebrations. Madison, considered as the founder of Western Carolina University, served as first president of Cullowhee High School, later renamed Cullowhee Normal and Industrial School, from 1889-1912 and from 1920-1923.
  • DATA PREPARED BY PROFESSOR MADISON, AT THE REQUEST OF PRESIDENT HUNTER, IN CONNECTION WITH CELEBRATION OF FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY, October 28, 1939 (Original in Professor Madison's handwriting filed in Office of the President, Western Carolina College) 1889 — Aug. 5, First Session of C. H. S. began. 1891 — Chartered by General Assembly. (Private Laws, Chap. 170) 1893 — Normal Department created by General Assembly. Annual appropriation, $1,500. (Private Laws, Chap. 120) 1897 — Annual appropriation raised to $2,000. Management changed. (Private Laws, Chap. 213) 1901 — Annual appropriation continued, $2,000, Special appropriation, $5,000 for building. Building Committee appointed: D. D. Davies, T. A. Cox, and W. E. Moore. 1903 — Annual appropriation continued, $2,000. Special appropriation, $2,500 for building.* (Public Laws, Chap. 40 [?]) 1905 — Annual appropriation raised to $3,000. All property of C. F. S. transferred to the State and name changed to Cullowhee Normal and Industrial School. Special appropriation, $3,500, for furniture and heating. (Private Laws, Ch. 369) 1907 — Annual appropriation raised to $4,000. Special, $10,000 for Girls' Dormitory. (Public Laws, Chap. 262) Act exempting students of C. N. U. S. duty from road and street. (Public Laws, Ch. 449) Act to create Building Committee** for construction of a building or buildings for C. N. I. S., with power to acquire land or lands for use of said school.
