D.I. to dear brothers, July 18, 1864

In this Edmonston family letter of July 18, 1864 D.I. (Dorothy Independence) writes to her brothers with brief news from home. She apologizes for her poor writing, explaining that she has only a bad pen and no good paper available. The letter was written on the back on a older letter from 1854.

July 18, 1864 Dear Brothers as Mr. Allen is going to start in the morning I will try to write you a line I thought you would like to her [hear] from us all they are all well at father Adda has another son the children a call it Rufus for their pa and uncle Rufus Brother T was well Friday. My self and children is not well. Allen and Mat is well I learn is at fathers. I have nothing to write that will interest you. I we have so much rain here the people has hard work to save wheat. You must excuse bad writing for my pen is so bad I cannot hardly mark and my paper I had no other to write on. I will close. your sister till death D I ____
