  • A Neighborly Call From The Hills To Kindred Spirits Everywhere CULLOWHEE, NORTH CAROLINA, NOVEMBER, 1924 BOYS GLEE CLUB WIN IN FIELD DAY GONTEST Cullowhee High School Takes Greatest Number of Points in All Events. The Cullowhee High School made a record showing in the County Field Day contests held in Sylva November 11th, carrying off the greatest number of points of any school competing. Cullowhee had 2GV2 points with Sylva High School next in line with 24 points. However due to the fact that the musical contest was ruled out in making up the final scores for awards, Cullowhee lost the first prize of twenty-five dollars to Sylva High School by one half point. The final rating for the former in athletics alone was 23V2 points and for the latter 24 points. The following high school representatives selected from the Boys' Glee Club participated in the musical contest: Joe Hayes .lack Turbyfill, Max Hooper, Charles Sutton, Sidney Mc- Carty, Dowd Shinn, Abel Hyatt, Ernest Hall, Mark Hannah, Edgar Fisher, and Ernest Monteith. The Normal School is delighted with the splendid work being done by the glee clubs, and this creditable showing made by the boys reflects much credit to Mrs. Arnold, the Director, as well as to the boys themselves. Cullowhee took its share of honors in the athletic events as shown in the following list of contests with the Cullowhee winners: Fifty yard dash, Max Hooper, 2nd place; hundred yard dash, Ernest Hall, 2nd place; four hundred yard relay, Jack Turbyfill, Ernest Hall, Dowd Shinn, Ernest Phillips, 1st place; Eight hundred yard relay, Dowd Shinn, Jack Turbyfill, Ernest Phillips, Max Hooper, 1st Place; running broad jump, Lyle Hig- don, 1st place; two hundred yard dash, Max Hooper, 2nd place; fifty yard dash, Hattie Mae Garrett, 3rd place; hundred yard relay, Mary Childers, Dorothy Stiener, Louise Russell, 1st place; two hundred yard relay, Mary Childers, Lucy McCrack- en, Hattie Mae Garrett, Juanita Wilson, 1st place; basket ball throw, Edna Ferguson, 2nd place; boys' tug of war, Cullowhee, 2nd place. Coach Johnson and Miss Benton, Director of Physical Education for Girls, are to be congratulated for their quick work in lining up the athletic contestants and getting them in trim for these events. ROBERT L. MADISON Robert Lee Madison Is Founder of Cullowhee Still Rendering Active Service to the School. Recently Elected to Represent Jackson County in General Assembly. breakdown, he went, by advice of the family doctor, to the Sequatchie Valley, Tenn. for country food and mountain air. Here, apparently, by the merest chance, a school committee in search of a teacher found him, and after much urging prevailed upon him to teach their three month's school. This incident turned the tide of the young man's career, and the would- be-medicine-man gave up his dreams of alleviating human ills and entered the unpromising profession of the under paid pedagogue, undismayed by the fearful fate of Ichabod Crane. The winter of 1885-86 found him teaching at Qualla, three miles from Whittier. Although he labored hard for nearly three years at this place, he failed to accomplish his purpose, page 2) Robert Lee Madison was born in Staunton, Va., February 17, 1867, and spent his boyhood in Lexington, Va., where his father, Col. Robert Lewis Madison, M. D., was physician and surgeon at the Virginia Military Institute. His great-grandfather was a brother of President James Madison. His mother was Helen Banister, of Petersburg, Va. He is an alumnus of the University of Chattanooga, from which institution he received the degrees of Ph. B. and A. M. At the time of receiving his baccalaureate degree, he had the double distinction of being a first- honor student and the youngest man ever graduated by his alma mater. The Cullowhee Normal has recently been named by the National Red Cross as headquarters for a distinctive program of Junior Red Cross activities to be promoted in Western North Carolina. The work is being organized with the idea of extending the service of the Red Cross through the rural schools and for the purpose of determining a larger program of similar character of national extent. North Carolina was first agreed upon for this initial plan, and after a conference with Supt. A. T. Allen, Mr. Everett Dix, Director of the Southern Division, decided upon ten counties in the western part of the state with the Cullowhee Normal as headquarters. The following counties were selected: Buncombe, McDowell, Hendersron, Haywood, Swain, Jackson, Clay, Cherokee, Graham, Macon. The work is progressing nicely under the direction of Miss Nell Whaley, the National representative, whose superior training and experience for the last five years as field agent definitely prepares her for her task. Miss Whaley has chosen five group center schools in each county named in which to inaugurate the movement and organize local Junior Red Cross units. The five schools in Jackson County are: Cullowhee, Sylva, Qualla, Webster and Glen- ville. The opportunities for activities and services among the children are far reaching. They are selecting their own lines of endeavor with the Junior Red Cross Calendar as a guide, and the teachers are utilizing the whole scheme in correlation with regular class work. The Jackson County Red Cross Executive Committee met Saturday and set aside $5.00 for the Junior Red Cross in each of the five schools, which will be deposited subject to the check of each Junior Red Cross treasurer. An account of some of the activities being promoted by the Cullowhee Training School children will be found in another column.
