Item’s are ‘child’ level descriptions to ‘parent’ objects, (e.g. one page of a whole book).

  • Lucy Morgan learned weaving at Berea College and founded Penland Weavers and Potters which had grown into the Penland School of Handicrafts by the time of this survey. The final remarks, written by intake staff, read: "An informal teacher, good executive. Fine promoter and Director. Thinks clearly and works straight to the point. Is persistent and determined to accomplish what she sets out to do. Has nice folksey manner and works well with people. Is a good person to work among the heads of any program the guild might wish to undertake." Questionnaires like this one were the raw data for the exploratory study of the Craft Education Project, a joint undertaking by the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild and the Southern Highlanders. Marian Heard was hired to oversee the planning phase that involved visiting artists and determining the needs of the craftworkers. Her results, often referred to as "The Heard Report," were published as the "Report of an exploratory study looking toward a craft education project ... ." The preliminary project led to an educational program funded by the General Education Board.
