  • April 18, 1933. The President, The White House, Washington, D. C. Dear Mr. President: I will greatly appreciate your active interest In the subject matter of the inclosed bill, and if possible I will appreciate a short interview with you in order that I might in a few minutes, outline more fully to you the situation as it now exists in regard to the Great aaokey ^fountains National Park. The preamble to the inclosed bill sets out, in a short way, the facts relating to this park, and it now seems to me that the only hope for its completion is through some action by the Federal Government. Copyrighted Materiai WesternCaroWUiiivers^ ^ ^^ ^^ ^ ^ ^ estaMiahed require1!einerqequisition of four hundred and twenty-eight thousand acres by the two sta es before It is taken over as a Nation- el park by tiie Federal Government. We have now eamost reached the desired goal, but on account of the depression, which has affected the two states, end the private subscribers, the necessary funds cannot possibly be secured in any other way than by federal help. The establishment of this park, it seems to me, fits in very thoroughly with the great program for development which you have undertaken. It is one of the wat rsheds of the Tennessee River. It would afford a vast recreational --round for all of Eastern .ajaerica. It would result in the ap- plo?raent of labor, in many different ways, if it could be made into a going concern, and altogether I am very hopeful of your earnest interest in connection with it. If the Federal Government, either through the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, or through the Reforestation Act, eould supply approximately the amount of money- referred to in this bill, and ■ reasonable portion thereof be matched through the Rockefeller Fund, the park eould be speedily completed and turned over in its entirity to the Federal Government.
