  • Great Smoky Mountains H&tienal Park Gatlinburg, Tennessee January 7, 19^8 Mr. Chaa. E. Ray, Chairmen Horth Carolina ITation&l Park Parkway and forests Development Commission Haynesville, Berth Carolina Dear Mr, 8ay« In reply to your latter of Deoember 31, we are glad te give yea the following information en the progress of the interim museum at the Ooonaluftee Banger Station. Early in December, shelves and suitable storage space were eon- atruoted in the attie of the Ranger Station to receive the pioneer collection. On the 17th and 16th of the month, most of the oolleotion was moved to Worth Carolina and stored in the Sanger Station. Some tables and exhibit eases have been eonstrueted in the lobby to be used in display of the oolleotion* At the time the collection was moved, Mr* Paul Hudson, Museum Curator for Region One, paid a visit to this park and had an excellent eppertunity to review our pisneer collection. He was mueh impressed with the variety and abundance of the items we have, and he thought that they should make an excellent exhibit of pioneer culture when properly displayed. Mr* Hudson offered many helpful suggestions that will be incorporated in the exhibits. A rough draft of the arrangement and content of exhibit* has been prepared, and it is hoped that thii plan can be expanded as additional equipment, and possibly funds, become available. Mr* Hudson expects to return to this Park in late January for a visit of some two months. At that time the museum exhibits will be prepared under his expert direction. Mr. Hudson has had mueh experience in the development of historical museums, and we should be able to set up a fine pioneer exhibit with his help. Mr. Hudson plans to bring with him various eigne, charts, maps, diagrams, etc., prepared by the expert artists of the Park Service Museum Division, These will add greatly to the attractiveness of the display. You will be pleased to know that not only will the lobby of the Ringer Station be used for exhibits, but the conference room adjoining the lobby will also bo available, this adds about thirty per ©ent to
