  • JftfouNTAiN Meadows Jnn ASHEVILLE, N. C. Hovember 19 1933 PIr Zebulon Weaver fo Mr C.H. Eites 223 Investment Building Washington, D.C. Dear Mr Weaver; How that the new Skyland Route from lark to Park is assured,we are writing to ask your support in having the new highway constructed so as to pass the Craggies thereby intersecting with the Elk Mountain Scenic Highway and hence over Sunset Plountain into Asheville. It seems to be the popular opinion In Asheville, that this route will be the most scenic route and certainly the most beneficial to the people of our city. In one sense of the word.it is selfish of us to ask your support in this matter since we are the managers and lesees of Mountain Meadows. We leased the Inn this year at the request of Asheville business men. To utilize the Elk Mountain Scenic Highway, would mean a saving to the Government since by intersecting with this highway at Bulls Gap,thirteen miles of the Park to Park road will have been constructed. The Elk Plountain highway is the most scenic drive anywhere around Asheville and travel has increased very rapidly since June 1st this year. Even now in the winter every ?/eek end finds the people of our city riding past the Inn.Over two hundred cars pass the Inn each Sunday now,if the weather is clear. Why not utilize what we have instead of routing it over a new territory.necessitating the construction of every foot of the proposed highway. We have written Bob Reynolds today asking his support and received a letter a few days ago from Reuben Robert son, pledging his support. We will appreciate hearing your views in the matter and will give you any support you may need from this end,in having the new highway constructed ah per the above routing. With kindest regards, Very Truly Yours Plountain Pie a do ws Inn Manager. *' ft

  • Zebulon Weaver (1872-1948) was a lawyer and U.S. Representative from western North Carolina. He was a member of the North Carolina Park Commission and was involved in the land acquisition process that went towards establishment of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and development of the Blue Ridge Parkway. This correspondence--a set of two letters--between Zebulon Weaver and Roy H. McDuffie, Jr. discusses the route for the construction of the scenic Park-to-Park Highway. Roy H. McDuffie, Jr. to Zebulon Weaver, November 19, 1933 In this letter McDuffie, manager of the Mountain Meadows Inn in Asheville requests Weaver that the Skyline route or the Park-to-Park Highway be constructed in a way so to intersect the scenic Elk Mountain Highway over Sunset Mountain into Asheville. According to McDuffie the Elk Mountain highway was very well travelled with people riding past the Inn. Zebulon Weaver to Roy H. McDuffie, Jr. , November 27, 1933 In this letter Weaver assures McDuffie that the highway would necessarily have to connect with the Elk Mountain scenic highway in order to be considered a scenic route.
