  • This 1899 correspondence is between Chase P. Ambler (1865-1932) and U. S. Senator Jeter Pritchard (1857-1921). Ambler was a founding member of the Appalachian National Park Association, formed in 1899, for the purpose of promoting the idea of a national park in the eastern U.S. Ambler informs Pritchard of his intention to circulate a petition and hold a mass meeting. Pritchard responds favorably to the idea but was unable to attend the meeting. A copy of the petition is included. Founded in 1899, the association disbanded in 1905.

C. , Dear Sixain reply to your letter I beg to say that I fear I will not be able to attend the meeting to which yon refer, but I as our e you that when the raattei ieipraperly n©rented to me that I am ie;oa er.c wil ing to do all I can to induce Cor.gre.ap to make sufficient gpp repriatien to have the matter thoroughly investigated, and shall leave no stone unturned in my efforts to secure the establishment of the Park-.. I have thought that it woulc probably be beet for me to not be identified with Ihe meeting to the extent of signing the call. In other woris, it will give the movement more strength if it is unde.stood that it comes from the people direct. I trust you Trill appreciate the force of my suggestion. Wheneve r I can be of service to you pleas© command me. Sin cer e1y yours,
