Circular No. 4 to citizens suggested by the mayor

  • wcu_great_smoky_mtns-13847.jpg
  • As Chairman of the Membership Committee, Chase Ambler wrote a number of letters to circulate to various constituents. “Circular No. 4” was written to local citizens whose names were suggested by their mayors. Each circular encouraged the promotion of the movement to establish a national park and forest reserve in the southern Appalachians. The letters were penned by Chase P. Ambler (1865-1932), founding member and long-time secretary of the Appalachian National Park Association. One thousand of these circulars were printed for distribution.
  • GEO. S. POWELL, ( j - DR. C. P. AMBLER, President. \ Sec. and Treas. $>♦ ©. #i«e 384. gythi fh*«mie, it. ©M Dear Sir: Your name has been given us by Hon. Mayor of your city, as one who would probably be interested in and give active assistance to our work for a National Park to be located in this section. We have been much encouraged by the favorable comment of the press, and by the enthusiasm which we have met. We want to bring every possible influence to our project. To that end we want members. You can aid us in the following ways: lsx. By becoming a member yourself. The initiation fee is $2.00. No dues thereafter. 2nd. By inducing your friends to become members. 3rd. By giving and securing us cash contributions to be used in the prosecution of our work, and 4th. By arousing as much interest as possible in your locality favorable to the National Park. Possibly you could organize an auxiliary association in your city, or you might through your Board of Trade or similar organization, if there be one in your city, secure for us official endorsement and many members. We would be glad to have resolutions similar to the enclosed form passed by your Board of Trade. We assure you we will appreciate any efforts you may make in our behalf. We feel confident that the purpose of our movement needs only to be understood to enlist your warmest co-operation. The enclosed booklet will give you additional information and arguments. Will you not help us? We are especially in need of funds for the purpose of prosecuting our work, and hope you can secure many members for our organization. The work done by the officers and committees is entirely gratuitous, and the money is spent only for printing, postage and such necessary expenses. Thanking you in anticipation of your assistance along the lines above indicated, I am, Yours truly, Chairman of Membership Committee
