AMUSEMENTS INDIAN BALL GAMES Games will be called at 2:00 o'clock p. m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Fair Week. Not fewer than 10 men on each side. Prizes Winning team each day $60.00 Losing team each day 30.00 ARCHERY There are three archery clubs organized on the Reservation and much interest is being manifested in the sport. The contest at the fair this year promises to be the most interesting in our program of sports. There will be a match shooting each day for prizes which will be awarded as follows: Highest club score each day $10.00 Highest individual score each day 2.00 BLOW GUN CONTEST The blow gun contest will be held during or immediately following the archery contest and will consist in shooting at the archery target at. a distance of one hundred feet. Prizes will be awarded in this contest as follows: each contestant being allowed three shots: Highest score each day $2.00 NOTE: Any contestant winning any of the above prizes for two consecutive days will be ineligible to compete the next day. Mr. Jack Gloyne will have charge of the archery contest as well as that of the blowgun, and any inquiries concerning same should be directed to him. GREEN CORN DANCE The Big Cove Indians are invited to put on the old time Green Corn Dance for fair visitors again this year. SINGING CONTEST There will be a singing contest held by the various Indian choirs on the Reservation, Wednesday of fair week, beginning at eleven o'clock a. m. All choirs on the Reservation are cordially invited to enter this contest. The choir leaders, will constitute a committee to select the judges to award the prizes offered. No prize will be awarded to a choir of fewer than ten voices. Prizes First $20.00 Second 15.00 Third 10.00

This program for the 1929 Cherokee Indian Fair is 23 pages and documents the fair that was held on October 8, 9, 10, and 11 of that year. The fair was first formally established and held regularly in 1914. Since it began, one of its main functions was to sponsor competitions that provided a showcase for Cherokee crafts. A tradition that continues today, at the annual fair, the Cherokee display a wide variety of high quality work. The fair programs were usually 20 to 30 pages each and listed the competition categories and the monetary prizes offered. This 1929 program is the first known program published and is found in the Special Collections of Western Carolina University's Hunter Library. At this 16th annual fair, prizes were offered for numerous agricultural products, Indian ball games and blow gun contests, as well as Arts and Crafts and a variety of textiles under the category of "Ladies' Work."
