  • In a letter to Horace Kephart on January 28, 1920, Charles Newton of Charles Newton Rifle Corporation describes changes he made to a rifle and will send more information when the new catalogue comes out in about two months.

C* Dear Mr, Kephart:- Yours of the 30th ult hand and noted, I have no later literature than the stop-gap catalogue, as I am holding up the other catalogue wishing to embody in it a lot of changes which I am making as we are equipping to build the gun. J I have made very radical changes since the stop-gap catalogue was issued, one being the entire discard of the sl&ave and another installing a mechanism by virtue of which the rifle is cocked by cam action as the bolt handle is turned down. Turning the bolt handle up merely moves the cockinrr head and firing pin backward but without pressing the main spring, and the main spring is pressed after the cartridge is fed in, and while the bolt handle is being turned down, and is purely a cam action and not a rushing forward on the; rear end of the tmirt trV1^ gprfryigv The new construction also doejs away with the enlarged rear end of the bolt, thus avoiding the! counter boring' o^ '"he rear of the receiver and giving a long bearing to the bolt 3 ike the Spriingfield which makes it very rigid when drawn to the rear, and also does away with scraping the browing off the bolt as the old model alwa3rs did. We always put our rifles out with the bolt bright because- of the scraping off of the browning, in action*- are not making any cartridges now and will have all our cartridges made'by one of the large cartridge factories, which is now equipping for the work.«We make no statements as to the velocity of the .30 U.S.G. model 1906 cartridge, as we have never loaded them,- except in small quantities', and did not have them * chronographed. i I hope in about two months to send you new catalogue, which will contain full details of the rifle.
