Champion Fibre sawmill at Smokemont, N.C.

While many believe that the Great Smoky Mountains was made up of small family farms, in reality, 18 lumber companies together owned about 85% of the proposed park area. Five companies had major holdings, including Champion Fibre, Suncrest Lumber, Ravensford Lumber, Morton Butler Lumber, and the Little River Lumber Company. Of these, the Champion Fibre Company’s holding was by far the largest, stretching along the mountain crest from Clingmans Dome to Mount Guyot and extending down north and south slopes into both states. At Smokemont, 500 men worked at the Champion sawmill and pulpwood plant.
