III. The next trace which we have been able to find ot the 200 aore tract of land above mentioned, is in an instrument where c- Nel• aeon. John W11118.li1S and J. R. Palmer were appointed commissioners to al• lot the homestead ot Young ~nnett, and said commissioners alloted th• above 200 acre tract to Young Bennett as his homestead• we have been unable to find :f'l"om the Clerk's re~ords any trace or a suit asainst Yo~ BelUlett., and presume that the original papers have been misplaced. Therefore• we are unable to .say whetheJi or not the allotment to Young Bennett of: this homestead was. made according to law. ·The :proceeding of the Qommissioners is of record in the office of the Register of Deeds fQr Haywood county. This 38.5 acres in Cataloochee tracts 225 and 225a were owned by Guy Pease. While, in general, the Great Smoky Mountains region was sparsely populated, the Cataloochee Valley remained an exception. By 1900, the population of Cataloochee had grown to 1,000 residents living in hundreds of log and frame homes. A few historic buildings have been preserved on site, including two churches, a school, several homes, and outbuildings. The North Carolina Park Commission was tasked with purchasing land for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and people living in Cataloochee were among those displaced. Cataloochee families continue to return for annual reunions. In 2001, the National Park Service re-introduced elk into the valley.
