  • A -&- It seems clear to me that immigrants Heinrich, Andreas, and_Hicholas were brothers and sons of Heinrich and Barbara (Grunauer) Gebhart,. the former born at Basel and baptized ilov. 30, 1699. He seems to have left that city and settled somewhere, where his descendants, including the emigrants to America, were reared. But I have not located just where he settled, in which place the records o^ birth, etc., should be found. These data are needed to establish indubitable proof o4* descent. I have the names of the five generations preceding the above-named Heinrich and Barbara. A Basel genealogist is now making some search as to the place where this couple migrated to from Basel. His report should be received soon, and I hope it will be positive rather than negative. The Mannheim genealogist has located absolutely nothing thus far, for which service I have contributed about §50. If you know of any member of the family who is willing to contribute to the search, or who, in his will, will provide for part o-° the exoense of book publication, please urge him to do so for the good, of the cause. I had hopedto meet you personally before this, but presume you have not gotten to this city as anticipated. Shall still look forward to that pleasure. Leonard has a passing interest in this genealogical work, but I doubt whether it would extend to the actual doing of any work or contributing any money. It seems that I am the only one, aside from yourself, who is willing to shoulder the burden in the future or who has done work in t he pa s t. Shall be pleased to hear from you at your convenience. Sincerely yours, B.S.- The line o^ Judge Kephart, of Penna., I have proved comes from Saxony. It is not connected with our stock, unless descended ^rom one who went from Switzerland to Saxony before 1600. I have the data relating to the other Heinrich immigrant than mine, who was born at Eppingen, Baden, and married a Wismer in Penna. and went first to Virginia then over the mountains to Kentucky, this being the Kentucky family of Kepharts. The latter seemingly is not related to out stock. By a series of three articles in our Quarterly, I have become practically the American authority on the ancestry of President Hoover. It goes back anciently to canton Bern, Switzerland.
