  • 4 Iowa Circle, N.W. , Washington, B.C., December 23, 1921. Dear Mr. Kephart: Lately I have been working on the Capeharts, and have ascertained a number of things. First, there are two distinct families of that name, the one from the Maryland settler as outlined in my letter of December 1, and the other, as I surmised, from Henry Kebhart, immigrant, who settled at Moreland Twp., Phila. Co. Then I learned that the Gen. Capehart and Colonel Capehart, his brother, of the 1st W.Va. Cavalry, during, the Civil War, were not of the Maryland-W.Va. Capehart line but of«the other line. The North Carolina Capeharts are also of the Philadelphia line. This has enabled me to reconcile some of the letters and data you had gathered, but which, I imagine, you had difficulty in reconciling. Sometime ago I got in touch with Mrs. E.E.Capehart, widow of the late Capt. Edw.E.Capehart, U.S.N. , residing here. They have several sons now officers in the navy. She was very anxious to determine her husband's line, and was disappointed that she had not been able to do so thereto^ors^ yH^r«Jiusband was a son of the above Gen'l Henry Capehart, M.B.,^wno in turn was a son of John Capehart, of Phila., who served in war of 1812 with a brother James, and later moved to western Penna. and Ohio, He was born in 1790 amd died at Martin's Ferry, Ohio, 1875. John was unquestionably a son of William, shown in tax lists of Phila Co., Bristol Twp., and a grandson of the immigrant Henry. The second generation, William, seems to have changed form from Kebhart to Capehart. He had at least four sons, viz., James, John, Henry and William. While Mrs. E.E. Capehart's husband descended from John, she had a letter from a Mrs. Corse, wife of a'deceased army officer, who ?;as descended from Henry, and she gave all four sons' names; in fact she was a daughter of Henry, so her information is reliable. There may also have been a fifth brother George. The tax lists also show a Conrad Capehart, but I believe he was the immigrant Conrad Gebhart. He lived in the same vicinity as the Capeharts, and may have changed his name to that form, or it was simply an error of tax collectors, lut this and the Maryland case show close affinity between the Gebharts and Kebharts. The 1790 census shows a John, William and George Caphart, Bertie County, Edenton district. Have you any idea as to whether these people are the off-shoot of the Phila. Capeharts? I question it, as they would have to have been born| around 1755, and the names duplicate those given above whose bearers were in other sections of the country. I have thus been able to construct a direct line from immigrant Henry Kebhart down to the present for both Mrs. Capehart and our historical collection. Inasmuch as your ancestor's name was un<|oubtedly of the form of Kebhart, since his brothers
