This Inspiring view of Mt. Le Conte and surrounding peaks is seen from the upper parking area at Maloney Point, on Highway 73 near Fighting Creek Gap. This point was named for General Frank Maloney, one of the leaders in the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In this view we see, from left to right Mt. Winnesoka, Brushy, points and ridges of Mt. Le Conte, and (in the extreme right) a little of Sugarland Mountain. The 24-page “Best Loved Scenes in the Smokies” was published in 1955 as a guidebook describing the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Each page has several black and white photographs of notable sites that are titled and described. The booklet is both a guidebook and a promotional piece for the “Thompsons,” referring to Knoxville photographers Jim and Robin Thompson. A page at the back of the book indicates that prints are available for sale. James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976) and brother, Robin Thompson (1895-1977) were both photographers. In the 1920s they were partners in Thompson Brothers Commercial Photography, a firm started by their father in 1902. In 1927, the brothers went their separate ways, each taking on various photographic interests.
