Basket: white oak, cradle
-
This white oak basket was made by Cherokee basket weaver Dolly Taylor. It is made in the shape of a baby’s cradle, but its small size indicates that it is most likely a child’s toy. Taylor’s basket is dyed with walnut and bloodroot to achieve the brown and orange colors that are woven into the basket. It is rib construction. Dolly Taylor was the daughter of Julia Ann Ned Taylor (1902-1991); the Taylor family was known for making ribbed white oak baskets. Dolly Taylor learned the craft from her mother and, for many years, Julia Taylor and her daughters, Rachel and Dolly, made baskets as a team.
