  • In this letter of December 2, 1951, Barbara Bird writes her brother Leonard Kephart (1892-1988) to thank him for his letter and contribution to their mother’s finances. She asks if he could send three or four checks dated in advance in case he is travelling and can’t be reached.
  • Boonville, New York Dec.2, 1951 Dear Leonard, It was a great relief to me to receive your letter of November 28th and enclosure. I had begun to wonder if I would ever receive a reply to my various letters to you, or what the next move would be, if I didn’t hear from you. The situation had run along for six months since I first sent a notice of Mama’s circumstances to you and we were actually scraping the bottom of the bag, when your assistance came. Whew! And THANKS. Inasmuch as you will be apt to be at the far corners of the earth at most any time, it would seem wise to make some provision for such absences. Could you send me checks, dated three or four months consecutively ahead? They could not be cashed until the dates respectively thereon;but it would avoid any chance of the treasury being insolvent at any given time. If you know of a better way to solve the problem, I’d be glad to hear it. I merely want to avoid a repetition of my apprehension on not hearing from you for such a length of time. - and not, apparently, being able to communicate with you. Checks from you and from other members of the family, will be deposited in an account for that express purpose, and from which I can draw without by-your-leave from Mama. Her bills will be paid therefrom. Margaret K. is changing to a new job, this month. She just wrote me that she will be able to contribute $25.00 a month toward Mama’s support. So with your help, and the combined efforts of Lucy and me, we ought to be able to take care of Mama. It is not going to be easy for any of us, but it must be done. Please let me know what arrangement you can make for future payments. And what address had I best use when I have to contact you in a hurry? Lovingly, Barbara P.S. I suggest that you date your checks the 1st of each month, if that will be convenient for you. It would help to keep the record straight. Roy and I will be at Marnie’s for Christmasand [sic] the following week. It would be nice if we could get together some time during the holidays. B.
