  • In 1901 C.J. Harris, a prominent industrialist in Jackson County, N.C., started the Harris Tannery in Sylva, N.C. The report by J.S. Holmes entitled Forest Conditions in Western North Carolina (Edwards and Broughton Printing Company, 1911) noted that the Sylva tannery operation was one of 'five large tanneries' in western North Carolina by the end of the decade. In its December 24, 1915, issue the Jackson County Journal (Sylva, N.C.) ran an article headlined 'Armour Leather Co. Buys Interest in Tannery,' and noted that C.J. Harris had made 'one of the largest business deals in this county in some time' by selling a share in the Harris Tannery to Armour Leather Company.
