  • A handwritten caption at the bottom of this photograph identifies it as the 'Almond High' school building in Swain County, North Carolina. The building was completed in the Almond, N.C., community in the mid-1920s and, with the improvement of roads and use of buses in western North Carolina in the 1920s, allowed for the consolidation of smaller schools into larger school buildings. Among the schools to consolidate at Almond were schools in the nearby vicinity of the communities of Judson, Wesser, and Hewitts. This angled view shows the left side of the brick high school building along with its portico and columned front. The photographer's name is unknown.
