o'clock and never got back till eight. We took some nice car rides. We went with Davie on his run and then came back to town and took a ride with Ben. We stopped at West Lake Park awhile. The moon was shining and we sat on a bench by the lake. It was beautiful and made me think of old N.C. and the dear home folks. How I did wish you could all be with us! We've taken off our heavy under clothing now and are wearing summer clothes. Last Thursday and Friday, the thermometer stood at 85° in the shade! I went in my stocking feet all day. It is very cool to-night which means rain.

In this letter of April 1, 1909, Alice (Clara Alice McGuire Bird) writes to her sister-in-law Minnie Bird (later McLaughlin) about life in Los Angeles, California. Mrs. Bird describes shopping, warm weather, and clothing. She advises Minnie to attend commencement and visit her in the future. Alice married Minnie's brother James Terrell Bird in 1907.
