Alice Enloe Dills

  • Alice Minerva Enloe Dills (1855-1943) grew up in Swain County along the Oconaluftee River in Cherokee, N.C. She married William A. Dills who is typically credited as the founder of Dillsboro, a small railroad town in Jackson County. She is the mother of Gertrude Dills McKee, the first North Carolina woman state senator. This portrait of Dills was made by the N. Brock Studio located in Asheville, N.C. Owner of the N. Brock Studio, Ignatius Wadsworth Brock, known later as Nace (1866-1950), was a photographer and painter. Brock was known in the United States and Europe for his pictures and paintings of mountain scenery, animals, and children. He signed his work "N. Brock" and won several awards for his photography.
