  • ©ontroi, these enthusiastic boys f®lt that they were th© lucky ones-there was always th© chane© that some Jap plan© might venture low enough to b© knocked out of the sky, and sueh vengeance would b© sweet enough to justify sny risks. Just a week after the first bombing, the tt»ps showed their annoyance at sueh temerity by sending another squadron of planes over the Canopus to try and settle the affair once and for all. Again the closely bunched bomb pattern blankeed the ship, but again only on© missile made a direct hit. This time it was a quick-acting fragmentation bomb which struck the side of the towering smokestack, and literally sprayed th© upper decks with small fragments* The gun crews, which hod ducked behind their shields at th© last instant before the hombs landed, had littl© protection from splinters coming down from above, and three-quarters of them were wounded-fortunately with no fatalities. No serious fires were started, but th© upper decks looked like a sieve as hundres df fragments had pierced the light plating. Stretcher parties from ashore boarded the ship almost before the dust had settled, and carried the fifteen wounded men t© dressing stations ahor© but th© hardest part of the task was to oonvinc© each victim that someone els© should net get attenti a first. One of the highlights of the seen© was the sight of "Red" Otter dashing t© the bridge, bleeding from half a dozen gashes, to make c©rt4in his Skipper was all right, then dashing baek to direct evacuation of th© other wounded men before h© would allow his wounds to b© dressed* what "softies11 cur decadent democracy produces S Th© damage dim to the one direct hit had heen only superficial, but inpeection below desks disclosed that several near misses had also taken their tool* laeh side had been pierced a few feet above the water line by forty or fifty fragments of bombs exploded by oontact with the water alongside. Another bomb had exploded deeper under water and dished in the hull two or thro® inches, ©bracking the plating and loosening rivets which were leaking steadily. These were the wounds Woich had to be bound up tc make the vessel again seaworthy, and th© welders were soon on the job plugging th© ppenlngs* Th© tough old girl was nofc ready for her grave yet, but if she were to continue a career of usefulness, it seemed host to make the Japs think the last salvo of bombs had done the trick. It was useless to pretend any- longer that we weren't there, but at least w© could make them think that what was left was useless. The rext morning, when "Photo Joe* in his so ut- ing plane came over, his pictures showed what looked like an abandoned hulk, listed ov©r on her side, with cargo haans askew, and large blackened areas around the bomb holes, from which wisps of smoke floated up for two or three days. What he did not know was that the smoke came from oily rages in strategically placed smudge pots, and that every night the "abandoned hulk" hummed with activity, forging new weapons for the beleagured forces of Batann* Evidently the Japs were completely deceived, because only one half-hearted attempt was mode a week later by div© members to finish off the faithful ship, and that was driven away without damage, by our anti-aircraft machine guns. These had been taken off the ship and mou ted on the hills nearby, ao as not to draw further retaliation to the vess©l* - 9 -
